Hey friends, Sorry, I was away from my blog for some time due to busy schedule and my involvement in different activities. Anyways, as an artist I come across this question many times in a day and every day my answer changes slightly however the outcome remains persistent and people understand. I reply, “It won’t pain; its bearable don’t worry; It will pass soon; Girls are getting big tattoos and you look stronger than them, be a Man” and many more to add. When I started getting Tattoos myself I never thought of pain instead I always wanted a unique place which makes my tattoo look as part of the skin. Today, when I've heard this question about thousands of times I realized to dig it deeper. Let see what I found!
Well, I read a book on skin anatomy long time ago, when I started reading about pain levels and an individual’s endurance it didn't take me so long to realize the connection between them. Let’s talk about some of my clients which include teenagers, Youth and some old age people. which will certainly put some light on this topic. On a fine morning I was setting up my machines for an angel tattoo and the lady sitting behind me looked nervous, she asked “Does it pain?” and I said “No, you will hardly feel a thing”. I started the machine and she pulled herself back, I stopped and mentioned “If you move or shake while tattooing you may ruin the design and I won’t be able to help”. She understood and I started making tattoo, after first few strokes I asked how’s she feeling? She said “I can feel some sensation on my skin however it’s not even near the pain I thought in my mind”. I completed the tattoo in next 2 hours and she looked absolutely comfortable.
The second experience was surprising for me as well. It was to highlight a shaky single lined Tattoo on the neck. The guy had heavy built and looked strong and the total time I estimated to finish the tattoo was 30-40 minutes. The moment I touched the needle on his neck he looked uncomfortable however I continued after a moment’s break. He kept saying finish it fast it’s painful. I’ve done many Tattoos on neck before however his expressions and posture was new for me. I finished the Tattoo in 35 minutes and he said “I am starving and need to eat something”. That’s the time when I realised what was happening.
Pain level depends on a person tolerance level. It changes from a person to person however; I cannot deny the artist’s experience plays a crucial role in minimising the pain. The one who knows the depth required to penetrate the skin (which is different for many body parts) certainly knows the trick to minimise the pain. In first example the fear of pain was stopping her to get a tattoo for a long time which ended positively. In second example client came empty stomach to get a Tattoo which seems really foolish. Some of the best tattoo artist in Delhi and India have put a note on their website mentioning about pre-Tattoo meals, I have also mentioned this on my website and I want you guys to understand why it is important. When you are on fast or you skip your meal your body start burning fats to keep you active and then muscles and tissues if you stay hungry for so long. It reduces the metabolism rate meant to keep you active. Make sure you take a healthy meal and something sweet to keep your blood sugar level up. It will help to reduce the pain and put defense mechanism at its best. It has been 5 years since I've been tattooing and learning never stops. I shared another experience of my life and hope you like it.
Remember Tattoo pains a bit however, "Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Make your choice wisely.
Let me know if you've any question related to this article, I’ll certainly send you my opinion.
